Are East Germans Putin’s Fifth Column?

One of the paradoxes of the current situation in Germany is that the citizens of the former GDR, who endured 40 years of Russian domination, are today among Russia's most vocal supporters.  They flood the readers' comment forums of the media outlets with rants against the West and praise for Putin's Anschluss of Crimea.

Jochen Bittner in Die Zeit writes about "the east German sympathy for Putin" – Die ostdeutsche Sympathie für Putin:

Warum gehört die Sympathie gerade ehemaliger DDR-Bürger nicht viel deutlicher den Maidan-Demonstranten, die tatsächlich für etwas sehr Ähnliches gekämpft haben, für das auch die 89er auf die Straße gegangen sind: Den Sturz eines selbstverliebten, egoistischen, korrupten Regimes, das ein Land ausplünderte? Warum entschuldigen sie die Völkerrechtsbrüche Putins mit der Tatsache, dass auch die Vereinigten Staaten das Völkerrecht verletzten? Warum bringt sie die Medien-Steuerung und die Propaganda des Kreml, die ganz nach Kalter-Kriegs-Mustern abläuft, nicht auf die Palme? Wie wütend wären sie gewesen, wenn Gorbatschow die Montagsdemonstranten 1989 als "Faschisten" verunglimpft hätte? Wo bleibt die Solidarität mit denen, die heute auf diese Weise diffamiert werden?

(Why aren't the sympathies of the former GDR citizens much more clearly with the Maidan demonstrators, who actually were fighting for the same thing that drove the 1989 demonstrators into the streets: the end of an egotisitical, corrupt regime that was looting the country? Why are they excusing Putin's violation of international law by pointing to the United States' violations?  Why aren't they outraged by the Kremlin's crude propaganda and total control of the media which is reminiscent of the Cold War?  How angry would they have been if Gorbatschow had called the 1989 Monday-demonstrators "fascists"?  Where's the solidarity with those who today are being disparaged with that label?)

All good questions.  And they underscore the fact that – 25 years after the collapse of the Berlin Wall – liberal democracy has yet to take root in parts of Germany.
