For 70 years German-speaking Jews in New
York were guided into American life by an influential weekly newspaper published
from a small office on the upper west side: Aufbau. From its beginnings in
1934 Aufbau was committed to rational-secular – as opposed to religious –
viewpoints, combined with a progressive-democratic political orientation. Its
circulation grew along with the number of refugees fleeing the
holocaust:
Begonnen hatte alles einst in der
jüdisch-deutschen Community von New York. Am 1. Dezember 1934 gründeten
Mitglieder des German-Jewish Club den Aufbau-Reconstruction. Aus dem als
Verbandsorgan geplanten zwölfseitigen Monatsblatt mit einer Auflage von 500
Exemplaren wurde durch die Flüchtlinge aus Deutschland eine renommierte
Wochenzeitung. Der Aufbau gab Tips bei der Wohnungs- und Arbeitssuche und
informierte die Neuankömmlinge über Einwanderungsfragen. Unter dem Chefredakteur
Manfred George, einem Ossietzky-Freund und Publizisten aus dem Berliner
Ullstein-Verlag, entwickelte sich die einstige Vereinspostille zu einem der
führenden publizistischen Organe der deutschen jüdischen Emigration, mit einer
wöchentlichen Auflage von 50 000
Exemplaren.
Aufbau was the first
publication in the States to report on the concentration camps. Readers were
exposed to essays by Hannah Arendt, Thomas Mann and Herbert Marcuse and many
other leading intellectuals concerning the nature of anti-Semitism and the need
for a Jewish state. But the paper fell on hard times in the last decade as its
readership aged and their children had no knowledge of the German language.
Fortunately, a young Swiss editor – Yves Kugelmann – saw a future for the
legendary paper, and with the backing of a financier Aufbau is published
once again in Zurich – now looking for new readers from the growing Jewish
communities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In an effort to attact this
new group of readers Aufbau has made
some changes.
Still, in the initial issues of the "new" Aufbau the paper has reconfirmed its commitment to the ideals of European enlightenment. In the most recent online issue, Kugelmann examines the "mass psychological" phenomenon of the public mourning of the death of John Paul II:
Das sind durchaus archaisch getränkte Verhaltensmuster, die tief in der
Menschheitsgeschichte verankert sind, die aber nicht weiterhin im Widerspruch zu
verinnerlichten Errungenschaften der Aufklärung stehen sollten – jener
Aufklärung, auf der demokratische und rechtsstaatliche Gesellschaften basieren.
Die Welt hat eine globale Vaterfigur verloren, «il papa», mit dem viele Menschen
Hoffnung und Zuversicht verbunden haben, ist nicht mehr. Doch wenn diese
innersten Menschenwünsche nicht von unseren Gesellschaften aufgefangen und
abgedeckt werden, dann hat die Aufklärung ihre Ziele noch nicht erreicht. Kultur
muss wichtiger werden als Kult.
Kugelmann is an optimist. Doesn’t he see that the Enlightenment has been in a state of decline for the past 100 years ? And in a full-fledged retreat since the Millenium? In any case, it is great that he rescued Aufbau, and that we still have a forum for enlightened Jewish discourse.
