The German Green Party was founded 25 years ago today. Not only has the party survived – against all expectations – it is positively thriving (for the moment, at least). Recent polls show its support among German voters gaining – up to 11%. This success is due, in part, to the positive image of the Green’s coalition partner – the SPD – stemming from Schröder’s deft handling of the Tsunami disaster. But the Green Party in Germany has been very agile in adapting to the shifting moods of the electorate. They certainly have come a long way:

Debates over the inclusion of left-wing radicals foreshadowed the later
power struggles between ecological radicals, the so-called "Fundis,"
and pragmatic "Realos."Politically, the Greens questioned the status quo
from the start: Calls for an immediate end to the use of nuclear power,
the dissolution of NATO and an ecologically oriented economy scared
away potential voters.
Little remains of the sandal-clad pacifists that protested against NATO in the early days. Today’s Greens are political realists who even support military intervention (Kosovo) when required. Have they betrayed the youthful idealism of the early founders? Not at all, says Richard Herzinger in his blog Ideen und Irrtümer
Tatsache ist, dass die Grünen heute eine moderne, erfolgreiche,
ziemlich effektive und stabile Partei sind und sowohl ihre Aktiven als
auch ihre Wähler wahrlich Wichtigeres zu tun haben als jeden Morgen vor
dem Spiegel zu überprüfen, ob sie noch Ähnlichkeiten mit dem
Erscheinungsbild der Gründerväter- und mütter aufweisen und ob ihr Tun
und Lassen noch irgendetwas mit wirren Visionen aus den frühen
achtziger Jahren zu tun hat. Dass es den Grünen gelungen ist, ein
festes, in den letzten Jahren noch stets gewachsenes Wählerpotenzial,
ja ein regelrechtes lebensweltliches Milieu herauszubilden, in dem sie
schwimmen wie der sprichwörtliche Fisch im Wasser, ist der überzeugende
Beweis, dass sie ihre Grundlagen eben nicht "verraten" oder
"verschleudert", sondern sie kreativ und zeitgemäss transformiert haben.
Now the Greens have a more affluent voter base than even the CDU. It is regrettable that the US is locked into a two-party system where a dynamic, creative political group like this has no chance – on the national stage, at least. An effective Green Party in the US could have a positive influence on the Democratic Party.
