New Left Party Launched

The new left alternative party Wahlalternative Arbiet & soziale Gerechtigkeit met over the weekend in Nürnberg to discuss strategy and pick delegates.  The party members in attendance seemed to be primarily disgruntled SPD activists, joined by a few ex-Greens and unhappy PDS folks.  From their Web site and public statements it is not easy to discern exactly what the WASG platform is.  What is clear, however, is that they are opposed to the ‘neo-liberal’ course of the Red-Green Coaltion of Berlin, especially with respect to the HARTZ IV reforms,

Ernst wehrte sich unterdessen gegen die Etikettierung des Bündnisses
als bloße Linkspartei. "Wir wollen eine Sozialstaatspartei sein", sagte
er der Nachrichtenagentur AP am Rande des Kongresses. Die Initiative
sehe sich als Anwalt des im Grundgesetz festgeschriebenen
demokratischen und sozialen Rechtsstaats. Erstes Ziel der
Wahlalternative müsse die Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen durch
"nachfrageerhöhende Maßnahmen" sein. Dazu solle ein rund 40 Mrd. Euro
schweres Konjunkturprogramm aufgelegt werden, verlangte Ernst.

It is unclear how these Red Panthers will cooperate with the other political parties. One observer from the PDS watched the proceedings with some amusement, and certainly didn’t see the WASG as a threat.  THe "platform" is simply too vague and contradictory:

Geschehen. Er ist Beobachter des PDS-Vorstandes und ein Spezialist für
die linke Szene des Westens. In den 80er Jahren gehörte der Hamburger
zur Führung der DKP mit ihren "anti-monopolistischen Bündnissen". Nach
der Wende war er in der Linken Liste engagiert und kümmerte sich später
um den nicht besonders erfolgreichen Aufbau der PDS-West. Er kennt die
Hälfte der Leute im Saal persönlich, und ihre politischen
Schattierungen noch dazu. Nach ein paar Stunden zieht er entspannt
Bilanz: "Die sind keine Gefahr für uns." Zu widersprüchlich ihre
Positionen und zu illusionär das Ziel einer neuen Partei. Aber eine
Konkurrentin wird sie doch.

In any event, the new party will have the opportunity to test its political legs in the upcoming local elections in Nordrhein-Westfalen.  It seems obvious that whatever votes the WASG receives will come at the expense of the SPD. What the party really needs is the endorsement of a big-name politician, like Oskar Lafontaine.  Oskar so far has rebuffed the party’s invitation.
