It looks like throwing eggs at politicians has become the most popular pasttime of demonstrators in eastern German cities. Latest victim of the shell game is Oskar Lafontaine who was actually grazed by an egg duing his controversial appearance today in Leipzig. It must have been a disappointment for Oskar, who expected a hero’s welcome from the demonstrators. Actually, the egg-thrower may have acted alone, and the overall reception may have been positive. Let’s see how this is reported tomorrow. Certainly the mayor of Leipzig did not welcome Oskar – ‘this Napolean of the Saar” with open arms.
In an interview today in Spiegel-Online, Mayor Tiefensee warns Lafontaine against trying to exploit the situation in the east to his own political advantage:
Wolfgang Tiefensee: Nein. Die Montagsdemonstrationen gegen die Arbeitsmarktreformen artikulieren Sorgen und Ängste der Menschen. Sie wollen sich Gehör verschaffen, das ist authentisch. Eine solche Plattform eignet sich nicht, damit ein Napoleon von der Saar endlich sein selbst gewähltes Exil von Elba beenden kann. Die Ängste vieler Ostdeutscher eignen sich auch nicht, sich persönlich zu profilieren. Wie sollen wir denn hier in Sachsen einer Instrumentalisierung der Demonstrationen durch die PDS entgegentreten, wenn ein SPD-Politiker sie gleichfalls für persönliche Zwecke missbraucht?
Tiefensee is also openly alarmed at the success of the PDS in his city, and generally in the eas (see my earlier post on the PDS)t:
Tiefensee: Die PDS instrumentalisiert die Ängste und Nöte der Menschen – und macht gerade politisch einen Rückschritt um zehn Jahre. Ich hatte angenommen, dass sie mit Blick auf ihre Regierungsbeteiligung in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und Berlin zu einer verantwortungsvollen Kraft in Länderparlamenten werden würde. Ich bin erschrocken über die Rückwärtsrolle.
The success of the PDS also catches the attention of Raoul Löbbert in Die Zeit. Löbbert points out a paradox that those PDS politicians that have been accused of being informers of the former SED have no credibility in the west, but can wear the accusations as a badge of honor in the east. On the other hand, the PDS only has a future as a oparty for all of Germany if it deals with the “sins of the past” as the state party of the former GDR.
Erst eine klare Distanzierung vom SED-Unrecht, erst eine lückenlose Überprüfung von Politiker-Biographien ließe die PDS im demokratischen System des geeinten Deutschlands ankommen. Doch bisweilen fragt man sich, ob sie dort überhaupt hin will.
Evidently the Montagsdemos continue to gather strength and took place in 200 cities throughout Germany. Spiegel-Online has a photo of a sizeable march in Kassel.
