How the East Was Lost

The fallout from the protest demonstrations on Monday has put enormous pressure now on Schröder: he has no chance of winning the next election without winning the majority of votes in eastern Germany, as he succeeded in doing the last two times. In his commentary to the “War of Nerves” Claus Christian Malzhan in today’s Spiegel Online points out that Schröder’s problem is not so much the sheer number of demonstrators, but the fact that they seem to represent a broad spectrum of society: older industtial workers, who lost their livelihood years ago, but also younger middle class and professional knowledge workers:

What is most disturbing is that the SPD doesn’t seem to have the slightest idea what to do about the situation. The plan to launch an aggressive “information campaign” is too little too late.

As one of the guiding lights of the DDR protest movement – Hans-Jochen Tschiche – states in an interview in today’s Frankfurter Rundschau, the protests are the result of 14 years of pent-up frustration and gradual disillustionment with the political process in Germany:

Tschiche is quite pessimistic and sees the growing protest as a reaction against Globalization, which is eroding the social support system in the east, but is now being felt in the wast as well. Will we soon see mass “Montagsdemos” in Frankfurt?
