Yet another member of the US military in Iraq has been acquitted of murder.
The Marine Corps dropped
murder charges Thursday against an officer accused of riddling two
Iraqis with bullets and hanging a warning sign on their corpses as a
grisly example to other suspected insurgents.
Once again the United States – whose leaders trumpet their commitment to "the culture of life" – demonstrates a casual disregard for human life. Konrad Ege has come to the sad conclusion in this week’s Freitag that the checks and balances enshrined in our constitution are no longer functioning:
Die USA verändern sich. Im fünften Jahr der Bush-Ära funktionieren die
in der Verfassung sorgfältig festgelegten "checks and balances" nicht
mehr, das System, mit dem Exekutive, Legislative und Justizwesen
gegenseitiger Kontrolle unterworfen werden. In der Exekutive regiert
einer der konservativsten Präsidenten der US-Geschichte; seine Partei
steht unter dem Einfluss rechtschristlicher Ideologen, die nicht
"weniger Regierung" wollen wie viele traditionelle Republikaner,
sondern mehr. Die Legislative wird von Politikern eben dieser Partei
kontrolliert. Vor diesem Hintergrund debattiert der US-Senat
gegenwärtig über die Ernennung von Bundesrichtern. Der Präsident
ernennt die Richter auf Lebenszeit, der Senat muss zustimmen. Der
Prozess ist seit jeher politisiert, gewöhnlich bemühen sich die
Präsidenten jedoch, eher Juristen aus der Mitte zu berufen.
The fact that this eroision of constitutional principles is occuring with the passive consent of the American people is a sad commentary on the decline of democracy here. Here is Ege’s conclusion (my translation):
The Iraq War and the "War on Terror" have inflicted deep wounds on the United States. The War President grasps for more power. The presumed opposition party stumbles about in the desert. And there is no outrage about the misdeeds that are taking place – misdeeds that would have been condemned as unAmerican by the entire political spectrum before the presidency of George W. Bush. No rooster is crowing now. The most deafening silence is coming from those compatriots of the president who profess to be followers of Jesus Christ – Himself a victim of deadly torture.
