The Dream Team of Oskar Lafontaine and Gregor Gysi is now official as the PDS and Wahlalternative (WASG) have agreed to an alliance for the elections this September. The parties join forces to combat neo-liberalism from the left, as announced on the PDS Web site today:
Die Vereinbarung steht unter dem Motto: "Es gibt eine Alternative! Für
Arbeit, Gerechtigkeit, Frieden und Demokratie! Gegen den neoliberalen
Zeitgeist." Darin wird deutlich, dass sich PDS und WASG einsetzen
- für Arbeit in Würde, gegen Massenarbeitslosigkeit und gegen die Hartz-Gesetzgebung;
- für Solidarität und soziale Verantwortung statt Ungerechtigkeit, Almosen und Gleichgültigkeit;
- für eine bedarfsorientierte soziale Grundsicherung;
- für eine soziale und demokratische Bildungsreform;
- für ein öffentliches Zukunftsinvestitionsprogramm und zusätzliche
beschäftigungspolitische Maßnahmen in Ostdeutschland und in
Krisenregionen im Westen;- für mehr Bürgerrechte mit direkter Demokratie und für eine tolerante Gesellschaft, gegen Rassismus und Rechtsextremismus;
- für einen friedenspolitischen Aufbruch, für Abrüstung und Konversion.
The alliance will be campaigning under a new name: Demokratische Linke – PDS Obviously the PDS brand is critical to getting the votes in the east. The SPD is reeling from its recent defeats and near total collapse of confidence in Schröder’s leadership. So with Lafontaine campaigning in the west and Gysi seeking votes in the east, the alliance should attract many labor-oriented SPD voters. According to a new poll the alliance could achieve double digits in September: 15% of SPD and 21% of Green voters would seriously consider switching to the Demokratische Linke -PDS. Compared to Angela Merkel, both Lafontaine and Gysi are charismatic, deft campaigners. It will be interesting to see how much damage they can inflict on their Genossen in the SPD.

I take it you are a US citizen. But I’d be interested to know which (German) party you would support in the upcoming elections and why.
I also think the Demokratische Linke-PDS is likely to make quite an impression–they could easily become the 3rd strongest party. The shift to the populist left (tax the rich!) by the Greens might halt siphon away some of their momentum, but at the same time the Greens will lose some votes to the FDP and the CDU.
Ludwig, my heart is with the DL/PDS, but my head is with the SPD. I do hope that as the SPD becomes outflanked on the left it will return to its roots and begin speaking for its base. That cannot happen with Schroeder leading the party.
With respect to the DL/PDS I tend to agree with the blogger over at lautgeben.de

But let’s see what happens over the summer; should be interesting….
