Lafontaine’s Suntan

The German mainstream press has escalated the personal attacks on Oskar Lafontaine while avoiding any serious discussion of the programs put forward by the Linkspartei.  Typical was the response of Der Spiegel, which took note of Lafontaine’s suntan ("Gut gebräunt zum Sozialismus")
from his vacation on Mallorca:

Oskar Lafontaine ist heute eleganter als gewöhnlich. Er trägt einen grauen Dreiteiler und eine silbrig schimmernde Krawatte. Er ist so herausgeputzt, weil er eine Attacke gegen seine Peiniger reiten will. "Ich trage einen Luxus-Anzug, eine Luxus-Krawatte. Luxus-Schuhe und ein Luxus-Unterhemd", ruft er in den Saal. "Ich bin mit einem Luxusflieger von Air Berlin von der Luxus-Insel Mallorca gekommen".

Lafontaine’s sarcasm was directed against his nemesis  – Die BILDZeitung – which accused Lafontaine of being a Luxus-Linker.  Of course, Bild would be the last paper that would provide its readers with any real analysis of the political objectives of the parties. 

Moving beyond the mainstream, I was also disappointed at the coverage by blogger IX at the Wahlblog, who was providing nearly hourly reports on the Linkspartei’s party convention on Saturday. When it came to reporting on Lafontaine’s keynote address, all he could write about was the politicians bald forehead.  Again, nothing of substance.  Andrea Noll investigates in this article how the established parties and the mainstream German press have collaborated in demonizing Lafontaine and the Linkspartei.  She notes how the press uses the word "populist" in connection with the Linkspartei – as a stinging insult:

Die Arbeitslosigkeit steigt, der Osten blutet aus, und die kommunalen Schulden lassen Städte und Gemeinden keinen Handlungsspielraum mehr. Der Karren steckt tief im rot-grünen Dreck – unter Merkel könnte er im neoliberalen Morast versinken. Die einzige Hoffnung: ein Linksruck – besser noch, ein Linksbeben, mit Epizentrum neue Linke, das SPD und Grüne mitreißt. Unsere Zelig-Medien beschimpfen die neue Linke als “populistisch”. Dazu sagt Uwe Kant: “Mit jeder Wiederholung wird klarer: Jeder vernünftige Vorschlag zur Sozialpolitik, Gesundheitspolitik, Beschäftigungspolitik, der die Interessen des Kapitals nicht genügend berücksichtigt, wird populistisch genannt. Das Wort ist dabei, einen Bedeutungswandel ins Positive durchzumachen. Ein Populist ist, wer etwa die Phantasiepreise der Pharmaindustrie auch nur schief anguckt. Wer sich der Verbushung der deutschen Politik widersetzt. Was soll’s, seien wir Populisten” (3). Avanti Populi…

The US press has pretty much continued to ignore the Left Party and the German elections in general, but David Rising of the Associated Press has this surprisingly balanced piece that appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle.
