Now that the politicians like Oskar Lafontaine and Gregor Gysi have tried to tap into the discontent in the east by speaking at the Monday protest demonstrations, it looks like the ‘movement’ is losing steam. Yesteday’s demonstrations were noticeably smaller. If some are blaming Oskar for the diminishing enthusiam for Monday Protests, there is unanamous condemnation of him for the election results in the Saarland – a debacle for the SPD.
Es stimmt schon, der Einsatz von Oskar Lafontaine im saarländischen Wahlkampf hat der SPD nicht wirklich genutzt. Dafür war er am Wahlabend hilfreich. Der Anteil des politischen Quertreibers an der Niederlage war derart offensichtlich, dass sich die Sozialdemokraten in Saarbrücken und Berlin zumindest auf diese Erklärung schnell einigen konnten: Oskar ist schuld!
It seems that Oskar Lafontaine has become everybody’s favorite whipping boy. The well-know actor (‘Tatort‘) Jochen Senf blames him for the success of the neo-Nazis in the election:
Senf: Lafontaine hat mit seinen linksreaktionären, rückwärts gewandten Thesen dieses Wählerpotenzial der NPD geradezu in die Arme getrieben. Wenn man den Kandidaten der SPD so vorführt und ihn als eigentlich nicht wählbar hinstellt, wie es Lafontaine mit Heiko Maas getan hat, dann schadet er der SPD.
Richard Herzinger, blogger for Die Zeit, hits home with his analysis of the connection between Montagsdemos and the rise of right-wing extremism. While not putting the blame solely on poor Oskar, he points out that the constant labeling of policiticans as “crooks and traitors” plays into the dynamic of the neo-Nazis:
Außer abgehalfterten Politcracks von vorgestern für einen kurzen Augenblick noch einmal das Scheinwerferlicht der Medien zu bescheren, haben die “Montagsdemos” vor allem eins gebracht: Der rechtsradikalen Propaganda die Ohren breiterer Wählerschichten zu öffnen. Denn die Rechtsextremisten sind es, die das unartikulierte Hassgebrüll gegen “die Politiker” als “Verbrecher und Betrüger”, die im übrigen alle gleich seien, am authentischsten eins zu eins in politische Parolen umsetzen können.
Maybe the results on Sunday were a ‘wake-up’ call, in more ways than one?
