Evidently Angela Merkel’s Election Manifesto did not go over very well among Germans living in the new eastern states: the latest polls show that the left alliance of the WASG/PDS alliance now has a clear lead over the CDU with 31% of the respondents expressing support. So the CDU has fallen back by 3% in just the last week. Certainly, the proposal to increase the VAT from 16% to 18% didn’t give many eastern voters the confidence that their living standard woul improve under a Black-Gold ruling coalition in Berlin:

But the root causes for the disenchanment in the east are much deeper than the CDU’s foolish VAT proposal. According to the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) east Germans have only been able to achieve a standard of living equal to 80% of the west, and one fifth of the citizens in the new states now live in poverty:
Folge ist eine wachsende Armut. Im vergangenen Jahr lebten laut DIW bereits 20 Prozent der ostdeutschen Haushalte unter der Armutsschwelle der EU, in Westdeutschland waren es 15 Prozent. Danach gilt als arm, wer weniger als 60 Prozent des jährlichen Nettoeinkommen eines privaten Haushalts zur Verfügung hat.
The PDS has been very skillful in tapping into the deep-seated ressentment in the east. One of the politicians I follow is Dagmar (Daggie) Enkelmann who is the deputy leader of the PDS in Brandenburg. On her blog posting today she mentions the fact that east Germans receive Euro 14 less per month in unemployment support than their western counterparts. This is proof that the "Hartz IV parties" view east Germans as second-class citizens.
Für mich sind 14 Euro ein deutliches Zeichen dafür, dass die Hartz-IV-Parteien keine Ahnung von den Problemen in Ostdeutschland haben. SPD, Grüne, CDU und FDP haben mit Hartz IV den Bürgerinnen und Bürgern in „Neufünfland“ klar gemacht: Ihr seid Menschen 2. Klasse!
So we are left with the very real prospect that the CDU will win in the west with a program of accelerated "reforms" under its neo-liberal agenda, while voters in the east reject the reforms outright.
