Patriotism as a Wedge Issue

I almost feel sorry for the CDU.  They have been looking for THE issue that will propel them into power in 2006, but so far have come up short.  First they tried to exploit anti-Muslim sentiments in Germany by coming out strong against Turkey joining the European Union .  But that tactic has only enraged the huge Turkish population in Germany, and has also been the source of some heated words from Turkey’s Minister President Erdogan, who accused Edmund Stoiber of wanting to make the EU a closed "Club for Christians".  Then the CDU decided that waving the flag would work. After all, their Republican counterparts in the US had extraordinary success in accusing their Democratic counterparts of insufficient patriotism.  But the simple-minded American "My Country Right or Wrong" patriotism doesn’t fly in Germany, where a super-regional European identity trumps nationalism.

Now a leading spokesman for conservative values in Germany, Cardinal Lehmann, has criticized the pratriotism-tactic of the CDU,  In an interview in the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung Cardinal Lehmann warned against a romantic ‘glorification’ of country and flag, preferring a deeper dailogue around ‘basic values'(Grundwerte).

The difficulty that many Germans have with the concept of patriotism is evident in a series of essays in Die Zeit.  They are all worth reading, but the contribution by the novelist Martin Walser is pretty bizarre.  Walser writes about asking directions from an 18-year old cyclist in Osnabrueck, The stranger readily complies, and this episode of common curtesy gives Walser tremendous hope about the future of Germany.  I have to admit I’ve asked friendly strangers for directions in many different countries, but I never felt a surge of patriotic feelings.
