The scale of attacks on Günter Grass for his poem (see my last post) has reached abusrd proportions. The New York Times has a good summary of the controversy so far.  But now another well-known writer has added his voice to the chorus of criticism.  Rolf Hochhuth, who broke dramatic ground with his great 1962 play Der Stellvertreter (The Deputy) published an open letter to Grass in Merkur

(As a German I'm alos ashamed of your arrogant stupidity that you want to prevent Israel from buying a German submarine that quite possibly would be the last line of defense for this tiny country against a nuclear power next door that could wipe it out over night. You are still what you always were: the SS man who kept silent about it for 60 years but who scorned Chancellor Helmut Kohl because he visited a cemetary hand in hand with an American president where 40 SS members were also buried.

Hochhuth should have kept his mouth shut.  Back in 2005 he disgraced himself by giving an interview to the neo-fascist weekly Junge Freiheit where he praised his good friend – the Holocaust-denier David Irving

It is time again to remind everyone that Ahmadinejad never said something like “Israel should be wiped off the map”. This is a propaganda lie, at least a very bad translation of what A. really said:”This regime that is occupying Qods must vanish from the pages of history.”
And it was the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in first place who extended that lie:”The Iranian President is talking about the total destruction and annihilation of the jewish people.”
Hochhuth seem to be just one more in long row of people falling for that propaganda lie. Iran has never attacked another country than its own. Bad enough, but wouldn’t it be a very bad joke if ‘the jews succeed in plunging the nations into a world war’ based on a propaganda lie?
Before this background, Grass’ poetry makes absolute sense. Israel needs a regime change.

Strahler your thoughts have created a devious idea in my mind. Maybe we should provide Israel with all the tools it requires to further isolate and oppress the Palestinians:
When by relying on our weapons and security equipment the Israelis have gone so far as to become recognized as a regime like South Africa in the 80s, then finally the ever lasting victims will also receive the stigma of the bad guys. When everyone realizes that even they can act as such, then – finally – will we Germans be free 🙂
I never thought that one day I might support the Israeli cause 😀
