Reform Breakthrough at Daimler

DaimlerChrysler won its long-standing battle with the unions and pushed through a €500 million cost reduction package. In return Daimler agreed not to move production from Sindelfingen, which would have resulted in the loss of 8000 jobs.

Daimler’s victory signals a shift in German labor mentality and is perhaps an indication that the reforms advocated by the SPD leadership are beginning to gain traction. More from Der Tagesspiegel today:

Stuttgart (23.07.2004, 13:57 Uhr) – Bundeskanzler Gerhard Schröder sagte: «Die zwischen Vorstand, Betriebsrat und IG Metall in langen Verhandlungen erzielte Vereinbarung ist ein Sieg der Vernunft.» Der Kompromiss zeige zukunftsweisenden Charakter und werde zu einer Verstärkung der konjunkturellen Erholung und Aufwärtsentwicklung beitragen. Der Kanzler fügte hinzu: «Ich bin sicher, dass nach DaimlerChrysler auch die Verhandlungen bei Volkswagen über Kosteneinsparungen und Beschäftigungssicherung in Deutschland zu einem erfolgreichen Abschluss führen werden.»

An interesting compent of the Daimler agreement is that its managers agreed to a pay cut, and Daimler’s board members agreed to a 10% salary reduction. Are there parallel cases in the US where senior management agreed to reduce compensation in order to save jobs here?
