Schröder’s American Qualities

While the US press continues to cover every aspect Jennifer Aniston’s heartbreak, there is virtually no coverage of the German elections or what is at stake.  Business Week does have an interesting article about the corporate money flowing into the coffers of the Christian Democrats, but that is the exception. Maybe journalists in the US just assume that Angela Merkel will be the next chancellor, since that is what President Bush wants. Therefore I was pleased to see (via Wahlblog) a piece by US-based political commentator Jacob Heilbrunn in today’s TagesspiegelWählt Schröder, ihr Deutschen! (Vote for Schroeder, you Germans!). Heilbrunn’s basic argument is that Schröder made the difficult decisions concerning reform, and they are just beginning to have an effect in the German economy.  Why should the CDU get credit for this?

Among other accomplishments: Schröder "domesticated" the Green Party, so they are no longer disruptive. Also, Schröder put Germany on an independent foreign policy course, so it is no longer the vassal of Washington. But what Heilbrunn really admires about Schröder are his "American qualities."

(my translation:  But it is precisely those qualities that have brought Schröder down in Germany that are highly esteemed in America.  He is quick-witted, superficial and opportunistic. He has the qualities that Germany will need in order to weather the coming economic and political storms.)

In other words, Schröder is a German version of Bill Clinton.

Thank you! Very interesting post about “American Qualities” and the comparision with Bill Clinton.
The SPD learned from the Republican election campaign as well. They have shrewd rapid responses to CDU TV spots. In fact one counter spot was released even before the CDU officially presented her spot. The SPD made fun of Angela Merkel and presented her as a flip-flopper.
You could say the SPD has learned from the Republicans as well.
While Schroeder has some Clintonlike qualities, he learned from George Bush that voters like stubborness. Bush was stubborn about attacking Iraq and not admitting any mistakes in the election campaign later and Schroeder was stubborn about Iraq as well.
Anyway, here is a quote from Der Spiegel about the flip-flop TV spot:

Haha – Merkel the flip-flopper! Very clever. In general, the SPD has been much more innovative using the Web and blogs for their campaign as well. CDU/CSU have been slower to use this new medium, and their attempts up to now have not been as effective, in my opinion.
