Sign of the times in Germany: Goodbye Wall Street, Hello Putin!

Germany continues to pivot towards Russia – at least in the media.  Now comes the word that the Wall Street Journal – the bible of American capitalism – will shut down its Web portal by year end. 

Wieder ein Wirtschaftsmedium weniger in Deutschland: Der US-Verlag Dow Jones & Company hat beschlossen, seinen deutschsprachigen Online-Ableger Wall Street Journal Deutschland (WSJ) einzustellen. Das Angebot existiert erst seit 2012 – Ende des Jahres ist Schluss. Gegenüber Newsroom kommentierte WSJ-Deutschland-Chefredakteur Ralf Drescher die Entscheidung der Amerikaner: “Ich bin sehr traurig”. Traurig ist die Einstellung in der Tat. In den vergangenen zwei Jahren hat sich WSJ Deutschland in der deutschen Medienszene etabliert und für Anerkennung gearbeitet.

(One less business publication in Germany: The US publisher Dow Jones & COmapny has deceided to shut down is German language online outlet Wall Street Journal Deutschland (WSJ). The offering just started in 2012; it will cease publication by year's end. Editor-in-Chief Roalf Drescher commented to Newsroom on the American's decision.  "I'm very sad." Sad indeed.  In the past couple of years the WSJ established itself in the German media scene and achieved some recognition.")

But as one door closes another one opens.  Vladimir Putin has now opened a German language outlet for its propaganda network RT.  Judging from the online comments, this move has been greeted with jubilation as a "corrective" to the Western-oriented mainstream German press.
