I was struck by a couple of interesting contributions concerning the war in Lebanon from Israelis while perusing the German online media today. First, Moshe Zimmermann writes from Tel Aviv about the "treason of the intellectuals" in the Tagesspiegel:
"An intellectual is no less shocked and dismayed than the average citizen when confronted with the loss of human life, but you would expect him not to accept media catch phrases without criticism… It would be good if intellectuals were to from a trans-national community that doesn’t speak in the name of an individual state or nation, but in the name of all humanity. Intellectuals should condemn violations against human dignity and protest against murder and manslaughter. They should seek the causes and those responsible for such evil deeds – even those on their ‘own’ side." However, Zimmermann adds: "Intellectuals in the Middle East, all over the world, and I, too, as an intellectual in Israel, have failed. We failed to discredit weapons as a solution to the problem, or to overcome the logic of military action and give timely and effective warning about the war ahead and its consequences."
"Wir dürfen uns unserer Verantwortung nicht entziehen. Wir Intellektuellen im Nahen Osten, in aller Welt, auch ich als Intellektueller in Israel – wir alle haben versagt. Es ist uns nicht gelungen, die Waffe als Mittel der Problemlösung zu delegitimieren, die Logik des Militärs zu überwinden und rechtzeitig und effektiv vor dem kommenden Krieg und seinen Folgen zu warnen."
Then the Israeli lawyer and peace activist Felicia Langer gave a speech condemning Israel and the US for the massive killing of civilians in Lebanon at a peace rally in Tübingen:
"Sie wollten den Libanon angreifen, das war vorbereitet, deutlich, diese Offensive ist etwas, was schon seit Jahren geplant wurde. Israel zerstört die Infrastruktur im Libanon, es zerstört das Leben von Hunderttausenden von Menschen und sagte, dass es Libanon in den Zustand von vor 20 Jahren zurückbomben will. Und man tut es, und die Welt schweigt, und George W. Bush sieht es als Selbstverteidigung an. So sagte er in Stralsund, wo auch ich war und ihn auch begrüßt habe, aber anders …{ (They wanted to attack Lebanon, the preparations had been made, clearly, this offensive is something that been planned for years. Israel is destroying the infrastructure in Lebanon, it is destroying the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and says that it wants to bomb Lebanon back to conditions that prevailed 20 years ago. They are doing it, and the world is silent, and George W. Bush sees it as self-defense. That’s what he said in Stralsund…)
"Aber die israelische Regierung lässt die Bomben sprechen. Israel will keinen Partner, diese 5. Militärmacht der Welt, die auch atomare Waffen besitzt, und trotzdem kann sie die Sicherheit ihrer Bürger nicht garantieren, weil der Weg zu israelischer Sicherheit, legitimer Sicherheit, ist, die Rechte des anderen anzuerkennen. Nur auf diese Weise wird Israel und die israelische Bevölkerung Sicherheit genießen können.
