Ulfkotte: Separate Airline for Muslims

The recent attempted bombing of a transatlantic flight to Detroit by a young Nigerian has unleashed a new wave of anti-Muslim hate and hysteria.  In the US, Republican political leaders are calling for racial profiling and are demanding that the young man be waterboarded (i.e. tortured).  Not to be outdone, Germany's "expert" on Judeo-Christian values –Dr. Udo Ulfkotte- has come up with an innovative solution:  a separate airline for Muslims:

Wir befinden uns nach dem jüngsten Anschlagsversuch von Detroit ganz
sicher an einem Scheideweg: Wir können so weitermachen wie bisher und
Millionen Flugpassagieren immer mehr Freiheiten nehmen. Dafür müssen
wir dann immer mehr bezahlen und immer mehr Zeit und Nerven aufwenden.
Und die Sicherheit erhöhen wird es kaum.

Wir können es machen wie El Al und muslimische Mitbürger extremen zusätzlichen Sicherheitskontrollen unterziehen.

Wir können Muslime aber auch so behandeln, wie sie uns mit ihren
»separaten Buslinien« und »separaten Klassenfahrten« und der Weigerung,
neben »Ungläubigen« in unseren Flugzeugen sitzen zu wollen, immer
wieder  behandeln: Wir können ihnen dabei helfen, separate
internationale Fluglinien nur für Muslime und für Gutmenschen, die noch
mit ihnen fliegen wollen, aufzubauen bzw. deren bestehendes Netz
auszuweiten. Dann können Muslime selbst entscheiden, ob und welche
Kontrollen sie wollen, ob und welche Schleier, Gegenstände,
Flüssigkeiten oder Nahrung sie an Bord lassen. Sie könnten dann
gemeinsam an Bord dafür beten, dass der Islam wirklich nichts mit
Terror zu tun hat – und können sich von ihren Glaubensbrüdern in
Einzelfällen gemeinsam ins Paradies bomben lassen.  

(We are at a crossroads following the most recent terrorist attempt in Detroit.  We can keep going down the same path where we deprive more and more airline passengers of their freedom.  This will be costly in terms of time and money, while increasing our anxiety. But it would do little to enhance our security.

We could follow the procedures of El Al and submit Muslims to extreme supplemental security measures.

Or we could treat Muslims the same way they treat us with their "separate bus lines" and "separate travel class" categories, along with their refusal to sit next to "infidels" in our planes.  We could help them establish separate international airlines – just for Muslims and their enabling "do-gooders" who still want to fly with them.  Then Muslims could decide for themselves what kind of security measures they want and what kind of veils, objects, liquids or food they would allow on board.  On the plane they could pray collectively that Islam has nothing to do with terror  – occasionally allow their fellow believers to bomb them into paradise.) 

Ulfkotte lectures across Germany and the United States about "Christian values".  But after reading this piece I can only agree with the recent comments by the theologian Heiner Bielefeldt that "der harte Kern der Islamophobie ist rassistisch" ("the essence of Islamophobia is racism.")
