(HT to Dietmar Näher at Politblogger) There has been a great deal of discussion about James von Brunn, the right-wing terrorist who murdered a security guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC last week. But so far the US press has not picked up this interesting bit of information published by Der Spiegel: Von Brunn had been exchanging text messages with Horst Mahler, a notorious neo-Nazi in Germany:

"macht dich blind für die Möglichkeiten, den Feind zu zerstören."
(The 88-year old anti-semite exchanged several e-mails with the former NPD lawher Horst Mahler on an internal list serv. Brunn wrote to Mahler that hate is "natural, normal and necessary. If you don't hate what destroys your, you will be destroyed yourself. Nations sympathetic to the cause would die." Mahler in turn argued that that "hate blinds you to the possibilities for destroying the enemy.")
It will be interesting to see if there are other links between right-wing terrorists in the US and Germany. Certainly, right-wing extremists like David Duke have long maintained a close relationship with the German NPD.
We know that James von Brunn was motivated in part an extreme hatred or President Barack Obama. Moreover, von Brunn was a well-known "birther" – one of those who doubts the president was a natural born US citizen and therefore believe his presidency to be illegitimate. It turns out that many well know right-wing pundits are "birthers" just like James von Brunn. The prominent right-wing blogger Gudrun Eussner shares von Brunn's hatred of President Obama and is herself a "birther". Last week she wrote the following bit of "analysis":

Eussner is a frequent guest contributor to Front Page Magazine, a hate site that promotes the view that Barack Obama is a secret Muslim.

I hate Front Page. It’s of course David Horowitz’s publication. It wins my prize for worst web site design, too.
A local winger, Andrew Walden, contributes to it. Walden had a paper for a while that nobody read and nobody advertised in, so he’s gone totally onto the web now. I never could figure out why he wanted to have a paper in this out of the way place. Anyway, no one was interested. This ludicrous person is a graduate of The University of Hawaii at Hilo and the source of a lot of scurrilous lies about Obama that circulate in the right blogosphere.
I asked him once via e-mail who sponsored his work, and he told me to mind my own business! It’s only intrusiveness into the affairs of others that Walden approves of.
One of the few people who advertised with him has gone out of business. Ha ha.
