In the next couple of years the United States will debate comprehensive immigration reform. Will we become a nation of armed Tea Party vigilantes patrolling the border, a police state practicing racial profiling? Or can we still be a land of opportunity for immigrants seeking liberty and a better future for their families? WIll immigrants be confronted with Kafka's sword, or with the welcoming torch of freedom?

Jede Nacht erstrahlt die Freiheitsstatue im Hafen von New York. Im
Herzen Amerikas jedoch ist jener Geist, den ihre lodernde Fackel
versinnbildlichen soll, längst erloschen. Amerika, das
Einwanderungsland, ist versucht, seine goldenen Tore zugeschlagen. Die
Nachfahren von Wirtschaftsflüchtlingen, Abenteurern und Verfolgten
verschließen ihr Land. Sie tun dies sehr handfest, indem sie ihre
Südgrenze mit Mauern und Zäunen, per elektronischer Detektoren und
Luftüberwachung verrammeln. Und ebenso verschließen sie ihren Kopf: Die
Debatte darüber, wie viele (und welche) Neuankömmlinge Amerika in
Zukunft aufnehmen will, ist zu einer gedanklichen Abwehrschlacht
verkommen. Zwölf Millionen Illegale im Land sind, zumal in Zeiten
allgemeiner Krise und hoher Arbeitslosigkeit, vielen zur Bedrohung, ja

The descendants of economic migrants, adventurers and the persecuted are
locking the doors to their country. They
are doing this quite tangibly by sealing the southern border with walls and fences,
with electronic detectors and aerial surveillance. At the same time, they are closing their
minds. The debate over how many new
arrivals the America will allow in the future has degenerated into an all-out
defensive battle. For many Americans,
the 12 million illegal immigrants – during a time of crisis and high
unemployment – have become the enemy within.
