Ghost of Kaiser Wilhelm haunts Germany

The popular press in Germany has had a field day insulting the Greeks (and now the Portuguese, Spaniards and Irish) for their financial woes.  Attacks on the "Pleite-Griechen" ('Bankrupt Greeks") have been accompanied by a wave of pro-German nationalism which is seen by the political class as "the new normal" – Germany is now no different from any other nation in expressing pride in a German national identity.  This new cockiness and xenophobia of the German political class is reminiscent of Wilhelmine Germany, writes Thomas Klau in the Berliner Republik: 

Die primitive, kurzsichtige, antieuropäische „Zahlmeister“-Propaganda
von heute ist das perfekte Echo der „Platz an der Sonne“-Ideologie des
zweiten Kaiser Wilhelms. Schon zeigt sich, wie „Normalisierung“ genau
die Impulse freilegt, die Germanias Politik bereits vor 100 Jahren in
die Irre führte: bramarbasierendes Auftrumpfen („An unserer Kanzlerin
beißt sich Europa die Zähne aus“) vermischt mit provinziellen
Minderwertigkeitsgefühlen – der immerwährenden Furcht des deutschen
Biedermanns, von listigen Ausländern irgendwie über den Tisch gezogen
zu werden.    

(The primitive, short-sighted anii-European "paymaster" propaganda these days is the perfect echo of the "place in the sun" ideology of Kaiser Wilhelm II. We can already see how "normalization" exposes the same impulses that led Germania's politics to disaster 100 years ago: swaggering bravado ("Europe will bite its teeth out on our chancellor') combined with a provincial inferiority complex – the eternal fear of the German "man on the street" that the clever foreigners are taking advantage of him.) 

What Klau sees is that this new "normality"  – i.e. the new pro-German nationalism as a reaction to the pan-European financial crisis – means that Germany is turning its back on the only successful (politically speaking) epoch in its history:

Die von Vielen in irrer Verblendung jetzt gewünschte „Normalisierung“
des Umgangs mit dem Nationalgefühl ist nichts anderes als der bewusst
herbeigeführte Bruch mit der einzig erfolgreichen Epoche der neueren
deutschen Geschichte, das gezielte Freisetzen der stupidesten und
zerstörerischsten Impulse der Politik. In kaum einem Land ist dieses
Sehnen zurück zur vermeintlichen Normalität des Nationalzeitalters so
gefährlich und abwegig wie in Deutschland. Wo sind denn unsere
deutschen Modelle, wenn wir den klugen, modernen, aufklärerischen Stil
unserer Nachkriegsjahrzehnte für obsolet erklären?

(The
crazed infatuation by many in a hoped-for "normalization" with respect to nationalistic feelings is nothing more than a deliberate
break with the only successful period in recent German history: it represents a  release of the most stupid and destructive impulses in politics. In no other country is this yearning back to the supposed normality nationalism as dangerous and alien, as in Germany. Where are our German models, if we decide to declare that the intelligent, modern, enlightened style of the postwar decades is now obsolete?)
