Barack Obama's huge victory on Tuesday night was celebrated in Germany, as it was around the world. The tone of anti-Americanism which has prevailed over the past eight years suddenly vanished, and even the most cynical journalists were moved to extol the historic victory as a reaffirmation of the American Dream.
Der Spiegel's Gabor Steingart – who for months dismissed the notion that Obama had a real chance for the White House – writes about the Resurrection of the American Dream:
"His base note is conciliatory, his overtone is exalted and the
harmony is finely balanced. If anyone out there still doubted that the
American dream was alive, he called out to his supporters in Chicago,
"tonight is your answer."
"At this defining moment," he declared, "change is coming to America."
Obama's tone embraces people, it doesn't exclude them. It's a tone
of political romanticism. It doesn't solve problems, but it lessens the
pain. Where Bush stoked fear, Obama spreads calm."
Klaus Kasten of the Bayerischer Rundfunk also evokes the American Dream:
Barack Obama wird als 44. Präsident ins Weiße Haus in Washington
einziehen. Ein historisches Ereignis. Der erste Schwarze in diesem Amt.
Das ist mehr als eine politische Entscheidung. In einer Zeit, in der
die USA weltpolitisch schwer angeschlagen sind, haben die Wähler
gezeigt, dass in Amerika alles möglich ist. Sie haben acht Jahre
Misswirtschaft abgewählt. Mit Obama haben sie sich für die Hoffnung auf
eine bessere Zukunft entschieden. Aber sie haben nicht für Obama
gestimmt, weil er schwarz ist, sondern weil er der bessere Kandidat war. (For people all over the work the dream has now become true. The usually sober and conservative Handelsblatt praised the victory as evidence of America's genius for self-renewal:

beherzt zur Selbsterneuerung. Das ist es, worum die Welt Amerika
beneidet. Und genau diese Fähigkeit haben die Amerikaner jetzt wieder

The Tageszeitung listened to the speech Obama gave to the crowd in Chicago Tuesday night after he had secured victory and heard a new American emphasis on solidarity and social justice instead of individual liberty:
So ist mit der Obama-Ära im immerwährenden Streit um das
Definitionsrecht des Begriffes "Amerika" ein neues Kapitel
aufgeschlagen worden. Anstatt für Amerika als einen Ort
uneingeschränkter individueller Freiheit zu kämpfen oder es als Ort

Finally, the conservative daily Frankfurter Allgemeine states what the US press has been unable or unwilling to ackinowledge: America has shifted to the left (Amerika rückt nach links):
