The first debate of the Republican candidates for US president took place earlier this week. As expected, there was much talk about the need to escalate the war in Iraq and eventually expand the military theater to include Iran. On the domestic front, with the exception of Giuliani, all of the candidates would welcome the state assuming control of a woman’s uterus. Perhaps the most bizarre moment was when three of the candidates denied the validity of evolution. Only the Berliner Zeitung picked up on this in the German press:
