Clearly the election of Joseph Ratzinger has not gone over well with women. Maria over at Crooked Timber is expressing what many women are thinking today:
I’ll take it that you know there is no way for a mere lay person, and a
woman at that, to have any real voice in the doctrinal decisions of the
church. And also that loyalty can only mean the lie of silent apostasy.
Is exit the only option?
In Germany the outspoken feminist Alice Schwarzer is "deeply depressed" by the new pope and urges women to exit the church en masse. The church will suffer the consequences of its doctrine:
"Es
bleibt alles beim Alten – bei den alten Männern im Vatikan", sagte
Schwarzer in Köln. "Jährlich sterben 100.000 Frauen weltweit an
illegalen Abtreibungen", sagte sie. Dafür sei auch und ganz direkt das
Verhütungs- und Abtreibungsverbot der katholischen Kirche
verantwortlich."Ratzinger war als Chef der Glaubenskongregation für diese
entmündigende Sexualpolitik verantwortlich – und wird als Papst
Benedikt XVI. auch in dem Punkt der verlängerte Arm seines Vorgängers
sein."
