The other day I recommended to English readers Thomas Frank’s book What’s the Matter with Kansas? which chronicles the triumph of right-wing conservative politics in the US heartland. Now it looks like there is an interesting book for German readers who are interested in ascendancy of the Rrpublican Party in the US. Berliner Literturkritik has a lengthy review of Thomas Greven’s Die Republikaner. Anatomie einer amerikanischen Partei, (Verlag C.H. Beck, München 2004). Greven is a researcher at the John F. Kennedy Institute at the Freie Unversität Berlin and writes about the history of the Republican Party from Abraham Lincoln to George W. Bush. This is a fascinating political journey from the front lines of anti-slavery abolitionism to the racist Southern Strategy which has been the cornerstone of Republican success since the early 1970’s. And it is in this analysis of the ideological shift by the Replicans to the South where Greven’s book intersects with Thomas Frank’s What’s the Matter with Kansas?:

This is also the source of the current tension between the traditional Republicans, who extol fiscal conservatism and a cautious US foreign policy, and the evangelicals who see themselves waging a war against ‘evil’ – at home against the ‘corrupt liberals’ and abroad against secular European cosmopolitanism and demonic Islam.
One excellent point is that the Republican conservative ideology dominates the US polical discource, even where the Republicans lack political power:

This thesis was borne out by the success of Bill Clinton, whose "triangulation strategy" usurped traditional Republican issues such as welfare reform and free trade. As Tom Frank points out in Kansas, this has been the source of the Democrat’s demise: the Democrats are no longer able to offer an alternate vision for America’s future.
