Before embarking on her visit to President Bush, Angela Merkel was praised high and low by the German media for her negative comments about the US gulag at Guantanamo. The new chancellor would speak the truth, it was thought, to the American president, and demand information about the rendition of European citizens and about detainees. But there was little to be seen of that Angela Merkel at the joint news conference at the White House yesterday. Yes, she "mentioned" Guantanamo in her closed-door meeting with Bush, but she had to acknowledge that dealing with terrorists is "difficult" and maybe the entire issue should be brought before the United Nations (an institution the Bush administration holds in contempt). For his part, President Bush said the whole issue of human rights at Guantanamo was based on mistaken perception. The torture and open-ended imprisonment of presumed terrorists is a "necessary part of protecting the American people", he condescendingly told the international press. Besides (despite what Amnesty International, the Red Cross, and the US FBI have reported) the prisoners are all treated "humanely" (Bush). Case Closed.
So what about the CIA renditions, secret prison camps in Europe, al-Masri, Murat Kurnaz – issues that concern all of Europe? No mention. Bush was beaming: "She’s smart and she loves freedom." The president spoke about her "moving" personal story of growing up under a communist dictatorship (conveniently leaving out the fact that she was an "information secretary" for the FDJ communist youth organization, and her family was part of the DDR elite class).
So the US and German press are ecstatic about a new chapter or a new beginning in US-Germany relations. But the new looks very much like the old – Germany is once again a reliable vassal of the United States. Wir sind wieder an Bord!

abgesehen davon, dass ich diesen besuch anders wahrgenommen habe, glaube ich auch einfach, er sollte nicht ueberschaetzt werden. merkel macht derzeit ueberall in der welt ihre antrittsbesuche und wird ueberall als verstaendige person angesehen. darueber, wie ihre politik einmal aussehen wird, sagt das nach meiner meinung noch nicht allzu viel.
sie bewegt sich das erste mal auf internationalem parkett und sondiert. im zweifelsfalls jedoch steht ihr interesse am machterhalt in deutschland im vordergrund. nachdem sie gesehen hat, wie sehr schr�der damals seine position festigen konnte, indem er nicht in den krieg mit eintrat, wird sie nicht den fehler machen, nun ihr eigenes wahlvolk gegen sich aufzubringen.
was freilich die geheimdienste im untergrund miteinander aushandeln – welches volk haette je so genau darueber bescheid gewusst?

wenn ich meinen gedanken von vorhin konsequent zu ende fuehre, dann haben die russischen regierungsgegner im auge des deutschen wahlvolkes mehr unterstuetzung noetig als die amerikanischen. amerika i s t ja schon ein freies land. (das ist aus deutschen koepfen nur schwer rauszukriegen.)
in wahrheit jedoch: ich weiss es nicht. (wuesste ich es, koennte ich mich als merkel-berater bewerben.)

She had breakfast with members of Congress. I don’t know with whom exactly, but I assume there have been some Democrats opposed to Bush among them.

And even the WSJ was forced to write about Murat Kurnaz because of Merkel:
“What exactly do German-American relations have to do with Guantanamo? Well, there’s the case of Murat Kurnaz, a German man of Turkish descent who has been held at the prison on suspicion of belonging to al Qaeda: German investigators and an American district judge insist the evidence against him is flimsy at best.”

Bist Du sicher?? Ich habe einige Bedenken wegen der Abhöraktionen der NSA sowie der Überwachungsoperationen des FBI gegen US-Bürger.
ich habe nicht behauptet, dass das wirklich so ist, sondern dass der deutsche waehler es so sieht. und darauf kommt es merkel an.
