Coming out the G-8 Summit in St. Petersburg it seemed that German Chancellor Merkel would stand behind the US position of supporting Israel and condemning Hezbollah in the war that has broken out in the south of Lebanon. But almost immediately there appeared to be a divergence between Europeans and the US on the crises:
The one thing that is guaranteed to send the Arab world and the Persian world over the edge is for the U.S. to be seen ultimately to be doing what they always believed — to be fully in cahoots with Israel," said a European official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of diplomatic relations. "The danger of allowing it to continue is that the United States is more and more despised. It’s not like the U.S. had a good reputation within the region to start with."
Then in Germany the Social Democrats broke ranks with Merkel as German Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul (SPD) openly criticized the Israel for causing a humanitarian crisis; she then criticized the US for blocking the UN Security Council resolution calling on Israel to end its offensive in Lebanon.
Today’s Frankfurter Rundschau reports that that there is a groundswell of criticism in the Bundestag for the position of Angela Merkel:
Meanwhile there is an open revolt from the opposition parties in the Bundestag which is contributing to the polarization. The Green Party caucus has called for an immediate cease fire, and the Left Party leader Wolfgang Gehrcke has bitterly accused the German government of standing silently by while the US "greenlights" another week of heavy Israeli bombing of Lebanon.
Here’s a mystery: is the Berliner Zeitung correct in reporting that German Intelligence (BND) actively involved in the search for the two abducted Israeli soldiers in Lebanon?

Berliner Zeitung does not write that the BND searches for the soldiers, but that they search for a resolution of the conflict.
The BND has successfully negotiated prisoner exchanges between Israel, Hesbollah and Iran in the past.
Oh, I was going by this second-hand report in the Tagesspiegel:
