There is a great deal of speculation and confusion about whether President Bush’s visit to Germany this week will create any movement with respect to the release of Murat Kurnaz – the young Muslim from Bremen – from the US prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Last week Focus Magazin reported that Washington was pressuring Berlin to accept four other detainees as a condition to releasing Kurnaz, but the German government would agree to take only one additional "terrorist suspect".
Now the Wiesbadener Kurier is reporting that Washington wants Germany to accept some of the "fifteen Chinese Muslim separatists" who have been languishing in Guantanamo for years even though the Pentagon admitted they were brought there by mistake.
Während die deutsche Regierung eine Freilassung von Kurnaz oder zumindest eine Überstellung durchaus als Erfolg beharrlicher Diplomatie "verkaufen" könnte, ist es durchaus fraglich, ob man in Berlin mit dem amerikanischen Wunsch nach Aufnahme weiterer Guantánamo-Häftlinge glücklich werden wird. Denn auf dem Wunschzettel Bushs stehen 15 chinesische Separatisten vom islamischen Stamm der Uiguren, die während des Afghanistan-Feldzugs der USA in Pakistan festgenommen und dann nach Guantánamo geflogen worden waren. Die Uiguren gelten aus amerikanischer Sicht heute als harmlos, doch weil sie sich in China für ein autonomes Ost-Turkestan stark machen, müssen sie dort mit politischer Verfolgung, Haft und Folter rechnen.
I believe 5 of these Uighurs were sent secretly to Albania already, and I was not aware that there any others waiting for transfer, so this report is also not completely reliable. In any event, Chancellor Merkel is under pressure to make the visit something more than just a photo-op. Claudia Roth of the Green party has demanded that Merkel insist on Kurnaz’s release. Also, the situation in Afghanistan needs to be addressed, Roth said, since the safety and the well-being of German soldiers is threatened there: "Die angespannte und fragile Lage hat auch mit dem Auftritt des US-Militärs zu tun, der nicht dazu angetan ist, das Vertrauen und die Herzen der Afghanen zu gewinnen."
