The Authoritarian Imperative

Georg Mascolo repeats the conventional wisdom of the mainstream media in the US about how American evangelicals are upset about the Republican candidates for president:

The most recent Washington Post/ABC Poll, however, shows that former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani enjoys a huge lead over his GOP rivals John McCain and Mitt Romney among evanglical voters.  This is important, since both McCain and Romney have been actively courting the evangelicals: McCain has come out in favor of criminalizing abortion, while Romney has been bashing gays and lesbians.  Giuliani has a record of supporting abortion rights and gay marriage.  Why would evangelicals support the twice-divorced Giuliani?

What energizes evangelicals even more than bigotry is authoritarian leadership.  Giuliani personifies the authoritarian leader who is dismissive of civil liberties. Guiliani’s message is simple: I will protect you from the bad guys, no matter what it takes.  Doesn’t matter that he has little or no knowledge of foreign policy; doesn’t matter that he set back race relations in New York City with his law enforcement tactics: Giuliani promises the police state that so many Americans would like to see. If Barack Obama is the candidate of hope and reconciliation, Rudy Giuliani is the candidate of authoritarian law and order.
