German Politicians Struggle to Condemn Moscow for Salisbury Nerve Agent Attack

Shortly after the UK government announced that it was holding the Kremlin responsible for the nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy and his daughter in the English city of Salisbury, Sahra Wagenknecht – leader of the German Left Party sent out the following tweet:

Not surprising, since Frau Wagenknecht and her husband Oskar Lafontaine have always defended Putin and Russia even as they constantly attack Merkel, Macron, the USA and the West in general for every kind of evil doing.

But Sahra's desire for a close friendship with Russia is shared by the right-wing extremist AfD (Alternative for Germany) party.  Last month a delegation of AfD politicians visited Crimea to declare their support for Putin and his Anschluss of the peninsula. A party official, Roger Beckamp, gave the following statement  declaring that Crimea was not occupied and the sanctions against Russia should be withdrawn:

And just yesterday Sigmar Gabriel, until this week Germany's foreign minister, gave a speech in Berlin at the Hotel Adlon – notably next door to the British Embassy – in which he said that Germany and Europe "should not be drawn into" the conflict between London and Moscow:

With all this love for Russia and Putin it is instructive to remember that Russia is not a part of Europe; Putin's goal has always been to weaken Europe by supporting any party or group that seeks to undermine the European Union.  Jacques Schuster, writing in Die Welt reminds of this simple fact:

Fortunately, Angela Merkel understands this, and it will be interesting to see if she can keep the new GroKo government in Berlin solidly with Britain, France, and the United States in opposing Putin's intransigence.
