I watched the interview with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the TV talkshow "Menschen bei Maischberger" and thought she did a very good job. There is a debate taking place in Germany just now about how to characterize the former East German State. Some on the right want to damn the former state as totally unjust – if not totally evil -, while others are more circumspect ("Es war nicht alles schlecht in der DDR / It wasn't so bad"). Merkel didn't mince any words: the GDR was an unjust state because it was "based on a lie". Furthermore, there is nothing to be learned ("überhaupt nichts lernen) from the collapsed system,the current glogal economic crisis of capitalism notwithstanding. On the other hand, the Chancellor was quick to praise the private sphere: „Leben besteht Gott sei Dank nicht nur aus Staat.“ (Thank God there is more to life than just the state.) She talked about the joys of friendship and family, where one could speak the truth. (""Wir hatten Freundschaften, wir haben miteinander die Wahrheit ausgetauscht, man hat sich geholfen.“ ) i don't think she'll lose too many votes in the eastern states for these comments.
Also interesting was Merkel's admission that she had been approached by the Stasi to be an informer, but was able to get out of it by claiming that she "couldn't keep her mouth shut".

Also worth watching is the panel discussion that comes after the interview with the chancellor. The always entertaining Gregor Gysi makes the preposterous claim that the GDR was NOT an unjust state "because its goals were just"

ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, wie schnell es doch geht, dass geschichte irgendwie “anders” erlebt und dargestellt wird.
frau merkel war nicht minder angepasst an das DDR-system als auch herr gysi. jeder auf seine weise.
beide haben eine andere art für sich entdeckt, die eigene karriere mit vermeintlich moralischen intentionen zu verbinden.
da nun etwas weltanschauliches draus zu stricken, ist nicht minder lächerlich, als von frau merkel zu hören, sie habe bei der grenzöffnung mit wildfremden menschen in deren wohnung dosenbier getrunken.
ach, was sind wir doch “bürgernah”!
fast weckt es den eindruck, als spiele es keine rolle, ob dies nun ein unrechts- oder was für ein system gewesen sei. die hauptsache, man kann sich nun, da alles lange vorbei ist, als widerständler gerieren.
komisch nur,dass die wahren unterdrückten und widerständler heute von kaum noch jemandem erinnert werden.
all das erinnert mich an gorbatschow, der einstens sagte, man könne nicht nach oben kommen, ohne für eine ganze, ganze zeit seine ideale zu vergessen. (manch einer vergisst sie für immer.)
Ich glaube nicht, dass Frau Merkel irgendwann “Ideale” hatte. Sie war und ist noch heute die reine Opportunistin.
Aber wenigstens hat sie zugegeben, dass “man sich angepasst hatte.”

With historical hindsight it’s clear that a state with so many enemies, internal and external, could never have lasted.
I just wouldn’t translate it as “unjust state”. This term “Unrecht” is defined in German legal philosophy, but the politicians use this term purely as propaganda.
In any case, if transgressions against international and natural law really were the topic here, it’s pretty clear to everyone but a few concrete heads that the new/old-fascist USA and its NATO allies are really the main culprits in this field.
