Neo-Nazi Spam

This morning I received an e-mail with the header "4,8 Mill. Osteuropaeer durch Fischer-Volmer Erlass" with links to the home page of the neo-Nazi NPD. Initially I thought this was an attack on Dialog International for the frequent criticism of the NPD and Junge Freiheit.  But it turned out to be a much bigger problem:

A new variant of the Sober spam worm is being blamed
for the deluge of German spam messages carrying right-wing or neo-Nazi
messages flooding in-boxes around the world this week. Once the
attachment is opened, the worm uses its own e-mail engine to send
itself to addresses harvested from the infected computer.


Some messages link to right-wing German sites. This be
linked to the 60th anniversary commemorations of the end of World War
II in Europe.


Sober-P grabbed attention at the beginning of the
month, in Germany and around the world, offering soccer tickets to the
2006 World Cup, but this is a new political variant.

Some observers see a connection with with state elections next week in Nordrhein-Westfalen:

Genau das ist offenbar perfekt geplant: Eine Woche vor den Wahlen in
NRW und exakt an den Pfingsttagen, wenn viele Zeit und Muße haben und
sich ausgiebiger als sonst der E-Mail widmen können, begannen über die
ganze Welt verstreute PCs damit, rechte Propaganda-Mails zu
verschicken. "Deutsche Bürger trauen sich nicht", "Ausländer bevorzugt"
– die neue rechte Spamflut ist heftiger als die vom Juni 2004, als noch
lange Hetz- und Propagandatexte verschickt wurden. Diesmal beschränkt
sich der ganze Spuk auf eine auffällige Betreffzeile, ein bis zwei
kurze schlagwortartige Sätze oder die (grammatikalisch falsche)
Aufforderung "Lese selbst" – und einen Link auf Artikel aus dem Spiegel, auf zdf.de, Heise Online, die taz oder direkt auf Texte der NPD-Homepage.
