There is really not that much to say about President Bush’s State of the Union address on Tuesday evening: it was a poor speech by a failed president. The reaction in Germany was pretty much the same as in the US: the speech was little more than "warmed-over platitudes" (Gemeinplätzen – Telepolis); Bush sounded "defensive" (Handelsblatt); the speech revealed the "weaknesses of the world’s greatest superpower" (Daniel Scheschkewitz in Deutsche Welle).
Particularly reprehensible was President Bush’s attempt to stifle debate about the immoral Iraq War and the lies that were used as justification when he labeled the war critics "defeatists" and accused them (us) of aiding and abetting "the enemy" (who is the enemy in Iraq, exactly?).
The best response was by an American – Professor NORMAN BIRNBAUM of Georgetown University – in the Tageszeitung. (unfortunately, I cannot find the English original). Professor Birnbaum points out that the ‘state of democracy’ in the United States is not good, as President Bush makes ridiculous arguments to justify the illegal warrantless spying on American citizens:
Und wie sieht es in der Heimat mit Demokratie und Recht aus? Sie sind ernsthaft in Gefahr – durch den Präsidenten. An diesem Punkt ist Bush erschreckend ehrlich und schäbig unehrlich. Er verteidigt seinen Missbrauch präsidialer Macht beim Abhören amerikanischer Bürger und der willkürlichen Inhaftierung vermeintlicher Terroristen. Diese Macht, sagt er, sei ihm durch die Verfassung gegeben – eine Behauptung, die viele Rechtsgelehrte bestreiten. Bush erklärt zudem, die Bespitzelung von Bürgern habe Terroranschläge verhindert – eine Behauptung, für die er bislang keinen einzigen Beweis vorlegen kann.
Interesting that Professor Birnbaum ends his piece by mentioning Angela Merkel’s recent trips to Washington and Moscow. I also observed at the time that while Merkel met with dissident civil rights groups in Russia, she only met with the foreign policy elite in Washington – the same gang that have done irreparable harm to America and to the world.
Als Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel jüngst Washington besuchte, traf sie die außenpolitische Elite der Stadt, die sich nach wie vor absurderweise für besonders wichtig hält – obwohl sie für das aktuelle Desaster verantwortlich ist und völlig abgekoppelt vom normalen Leben im Land. Als Merkel nach Moskau flog, besuchte sie auch die dortige Opposition. Ihr Versäumnis, Vertreter der US-Bürgergesellschaft zu treffen, kann nicht gerade als Vertrauensbeweis für die amerikanische Demokratie aufgefasst werden. Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass die Europäer wissen, wie widersprüchlich die amerikanische Nation dennoch ist.
