Sigmar Gabriel, leader of the German Social Democrats, threw cold water on the idea of a progressive Red-Red-Green (R2G) alliance mainly because of the inflammatory rhetoric coming from the Left Party ("Die LINKE"). Gabriel singled out Sahra Wagenknecht the main offender and said that her performance in the Bundestag shows that the Left Party is incapable of governing. He compared her language to the demagoguery of the right-wing Afd and the French ne0-fascist Front National.

"Frau Wagenknecht hält im Bundestag Reden gegen Europa, wie es sonst nur die AfD oder die Rechtsradikalen in Frankreich tun", kritisierte er in der "Bild"-Zeitung. "Wer so redet, entfernt sich eher von der Regierungsfähigkeit". Diese Frage stelle sich erst dann, wenn sich die Linkspartei geändert habe, sagte er dem Blatt.
Die Linkspartei müsse sich daher entscheiden, ob sie Gestalterin sein wolle oder Daueropposition. "Erst wenn sie das getan hat, wissen andere wie wir oder die Grünen, ob es sich lohnt, über Bündnisse nachzudenken."
Sahra Wagenknecht's husband Oskar Lafontaine has also echoed the demands of the far-right AfD ("Alternative for Germany") party in his constant call for Germany to leave the NATO alliance. On his Facebook page Oskar called Hillary Clinton "the next terrorist in the White House."
