The New Face of Racism in America

Recently a group of vigilante Americans in states bordering Mexico got together to form the Minuteman Project with the goal of patrolling the border to watch for illegal immigrants.  While the group is supposedly non-violent, the California chapter is known to use firearms, baseball bats and machetes.  A recent report on the group in taz romanticizes them as cowboys in the "Wild West".

Das umstrittene Bürgerwehr-Projekt startete damit in Arizona in seine erste Phase. Rund 1.000 Freiwillige aus mehreren Landesteilen der USA waren dabei. Im Herbst wollen sie zurückkommen – zu tausenden, versprechen die Organisatoren. Minuteman-Gründer James Gilchrist soll gesagt haben: "Wir müssen unsere Heimat schützen, die durch Horden einfallender illegaler Ausländer ausgeplündert wird."

But there is something much more sinister about the group, which has become a magnet for white supremicists, neo-Nazis and other blatently racist organizations.  Here is a photograph taken at a recent Minuteman rally:

Now the Minutemen have also been embraced by the conservative media in the US.  Michelle Malkin, the darling of the right-wing noise machine, received thunderous applause the other day when she told a group of young Republicans that "We are all Minutemen now."   So now we know what the new Republican Southern Strategy will be.
