Americans voted for change yesterday. Results for the Senate are still coming in, but the House in now in the hands of Democrats. Here are some highlights:
- Exit polls show anger about the Iraq War and the incompetence of the Bush administration were decisve factors in the vote.
- Vermont elects the first socialist senator: Bernie Sanders.
- The darling of the Gay bashers and evangelicals – Rick Santorum – lost big.
- Massachusetts elects its first Black governor – the charismatic Deval Patrick.
For the past two weeks President Bush has been barnstorming the country, telling people that a vote for the Democrats is a vote for the terrorists, but America rejects his politics of "fear and smear". Bush is now a lame duck; watch for the House to immediately start hearings into all aspects of the corruption that has nearly destroyed the nation.
Now we can get to work on bringing America back …. the American people have spoken loud and clear.
UPDATE: Spiegel covers "US-Sozialist" Bernie Sanders.

bye bye Rummy! Seems Bush is getting the message / heat.. i still wish, they would show him the inside of a prison cell (for let’s say two years!).. But i guess, that would be asking too much of the situation.
Perhaps the dems could push for an indictment of Bush (in the last two months of his presidency), who knows..
Whoopie.
I’m no Bush fan, but I have no interest in sitting through two years of pointless congressional investigations while issues which actually matter to the future of the US are ignored by both parties.
Fry,
I think it will be interesting to see how many investigations take place, and whether they lead to a voter backlash. I know it’s petty of me, but I both hope and think it likely that major scandals will be unearthed. This may distract the nation, but it will also further discredit the Republicans. And considering the concrete consequences of Republican governance, that is a good thing.
Re. the war in Iraq, it seems to me that the Dem majority won’t be able to do anything except threaten to deny funding.
