Republicans Applaud Torture

Last night was the second debate of the Republican candidates for the 2008 presidential election.  Two weeks ago we watched them denying the scientific validity of evolution; this time they tried to outdo each other in calling for more torture, even as they tried to impress the audience with their credentials as devout Christians. In the German press, Die Welt picked up on this:

Here is the video clip on the torture debate.  Only John McCain answered honorably; listen to the others call for torture – to stormy applause from the audience.  Mitt Romney receives thunderous applause when he calls for "doubling" the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and denying any legal due process to detainees there.

“not torture, but enhanced interrogation technique” wow, that’s really a big difference.. doubling Guantanamo explicitly to circumvent the possibility of anyone using the legal system.. Why don’t those that were clapping their hands realize, that they too could (given some years and some ‘suspicion’) be in that position? OH MY GOD!

Hm, I can’t find my notes on the debate right now, but didn’t Paul disapprove of torture because of what the US learned from history? Or am I just confused about this?

Yes, and for speaking the truth Paul was excoriated by the other candidates and ridiculed by the audience.
I understand there is now pressure to exclude Ron Paul from future Republican debates.
Much as I dislike McCain for his war-mongering and pandering to the right, he does speak with moral authority on the issue of torture. Notice the absolute silence of the audience to McCain’s answers on torture, and the wild applause for Giuliani and Romney. Sickening!

Since you mention that the GOP would like to get Paul out of any future debate, I’d really like to know: What do you think of Mike Gravel so far? (If you’ve watched the Democratic debate, that is.)
Because I read that the other Democratic candidates would be very glad if he’d drop out of the race as soon as possible, for similar reasons. And so far I found Gravel to be a breath of fresh air. Sure, he won’t even come close to winning any primaries, but so far he seems to keep the other candidates on their toes, which I quite enjoy.

Gravel was very colorful in the first debate. I hope he stays in – he’ll force the others to take a clear position on the tough issues.

Republicans Debate Torture: “I’m looking for Jack Bauer”

Please let me generalize a little bit in answering these questions: Why are European leftists unpopular in the US? Because they talk so much about social justice, the welfare state and evil capitalists. Why are American conservatives unpopular in Europe?
